Earl grew up in Bakersfield, California where he attended Washington Junior richly and Kern County High School. He later attended the University of California at Berkeley earning his undergraduate and law degrees, graduating in 1912. After graduation, he spent three days as a jr. lawyer in San Francisco and Oakland firms. He went into the Army as a private in 1917, came out as a prototypal lieutenant in 1919, took a job as shop assistant of the California state assemblys judiciary committee and never returned to private practice. He was deputy city attorney for Oakland from 1919 to 1920, deputy territorial dominion attorney for Alameda County from 1920 to 1925, and district attorney from 1925 to 1939. Earl Warren was elected attorney general in 1938 and won the Republican nomination for governor in 1942.
