Symbolic Interactionists: Dramaturgy The theorist Erving Goffman and his sociological ideas in symbolic interaction and field most closely resemble my soulal spellbind of sociology. Unlike functionalism and conflict theories, symbolic interaction focuses on the pestilent group or micro interactions. Erving Goffman narrowed the focus of field of operations to the actions or interactions designed to influence the opinions of others. He broke those actions into what he called front-stage and back-stage interactions. The front-stage interactions were the actual interactions that others could detect, and the back-stage interactions were the steps taken while others could not identify to further the desired opinion. The front-stage and back-stage behaviors ar concepts included in moment management (Vissing, 2011). In his book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, Goffman introduces the conjecture of dramaturgy, and summarized the idea as a psyches motivatio n to influence the impressions that the observing people are forming (p. 1 13, 1959). This influence is chiefly obtained by manipulating personal actions and exacting unconscious action as much as possible. This supposition describes the actions I have observed both in my family and in myself, and that similarity impacted my decision to choose Goffman.
