Frederick Douglass wrote an autobiography titled Learning to Read. It ia virtually what it was
like for him growing up as a striver. though he was born a slave, he did not indirect request to continue
living as a slave for life. disdain the terrible abuse he suffered from his slaveholder, he overcame
slavery by inspiration and creativity and in that, he learned how to claim and write.
Douglass watched as his mistress transformed from what he describes as a kind and
tenderhearted woman (346) to her heart becoming like stone(346). Slavery robbed his mistress
of her heavenly qualities (346). She no long-dated had joy and happiness, which had directed her to
help the hungry and clothe the homeless. She was cosmos taught how to treat him as if he was no
longer a human being. This new learned behavior just created nauseate in her heart. He saw how
slavery affected not solo him but what it did to others.
Since slaves were not suppose to hold and write, Douglass had to father creative in how
he learned. When he was sent on errands, he would take his book with him. He would do his
errands rapidly and this would allow him time for quick reading lessons. He would fast one the
little white boys and convert them into teachers (347).



The ship-yard is where he began how to
read. He learns only four letters until once again he starts getting the other boys to teach him. He
soon learned how to read and write very well.
When he was twelve years old, he got ahold of a book that became an inspiration to him
that one day he to would be set free. The book was called The Columbian Orator (Douglass
347). It was most a slave owner who voluntarily emancipated the slave on the part of the master.
The more he read, the more he despised his own slave owner. He describes them as a band of
successful robbers, stolen from our homes brought to a strange land reduce us to
